I like my job at the theater, but only when I’m not working the concession stand. Problem is.... I’ve only been scheduled there for the past two months. On top of that, I have to close every single time, which means I’m stuck mopping the floor and cleaning everything well past midnight. Every. Single. Time. I told my manager that I much prefer cleaning theaters and I would be happy to do that instead, so he let me.... for two weeks. Now I’m back in concessions, closing every single night. There are people who never get scheduled there, so I don’t see why he can’t keep things fair. I seriously can’t deal with this for more than another month, especially since I earn minimum wage with no chance of a raise and not even a slight increase in pay during overtime, so I really need to find something better fast.

I’ve found that I actually enjoy jobs where I mainly just pick up trash, as it’s a simple task, I can do it at my own pace, and I never have to deal with angry customers. I’d stick with my current job for years if there was a way that I could only do that part of it and not get stuck serving food all the time. If anyone knows of anything like that which actually pays more than $7.25, I’d love it.

Otherwise, what other jobs can you think of where I won’t ever have to serve food and I won’t have to deal with angry people constantly? I don’t mind working with customers, but I really can’t deal with the constant complaints about everything beyond my control. Anything would be an improvement over this, really.

Sanitation department or the street department for your city? You could be one of those people on the back of garbage trucks that drive around town. That's always seemed like a cool job to me.

Unfortunately, these two are mutually exclusive. If you’re ever dealing with customers, especially in near minimum wage jobs, you will always have to deal with the inconsiderate/stupid/mean/illogical dregs of society.

Maybe look for a job at a dealership washing or moving cars?

Any sports stadiums or arenas nearby?

Don’t know where you’re at but landscaping is tough work but you rarely deal with people and the pay is usually decent.

There are a couple. A bit farther than I’d like to commute, but I’ll definitely look into them.

How old are you? I know some people who are garbage men and they actually make pretty good money and you get to pick up trash all day! The only bad thing is that instead of late nights you get early mornings.

Yeah, people are slobs at sporting events and depending on the place you can make a decent buck picking up trash.

I’ve worked as a cashier elsewhere, and it’s a whole different game when you’re dealing with food that’s made on-location. I’d estimate that 25% of it comes back to me with some sort of angry complaint about how I made it all wrong, even though all I do is press a couple of buttons and let the machines handle everything.

Cool! I’d assume I’d also have a chance at finding money out there, too. That’s a small part of what I like about cleaning the theaters; I’ll typically get at least an extra dollar every hour just from the change I find under the seats.

Yeah, the food service industry is on a whole other level. I worked retail through high school and college (and for a little while after college, until I got my big kid job). I liked a lot of things about it, and hated a lot too. I would never want to work in food service.

Here’s the perfect job for you. You get to be outside, you get to be near cars, you get to pick up trash, and you probably get to be your own boss. I hear they provide the vest and the helmet.

But seriously, yours can’t be the only theater in town. Apply somewhere else and quit your current gig.

Damnit, its all your fault that the chicken fingers are too crispy damn you! And while I’m on the subject of movie theater chicken fingers, what’s with them using the Heinz honey mustard? That’s like the worst honey mustard sauce I’ve ever tasted in my life.

I did inventory for a while when I was in school. You basically count stuff and enter it into a little computer thing you wear on your thigh. As long as your relatively efficient you can spend the whole time not being bothered or having to deal with anyone. RGIS and WIS are the two big companies (there’s others out there, but I never worked for them). They’re in almost every city, are hiring non-stop, and typically pay more than minimum wage. Don’t know home much it’s changed in the 15 years since I last worked there but when I did: hours were boom and bust (and often nighttime), though they were pretty flexible if you were competent (store would be coming up and the lead would call around and select a team...only ‘all-hands’ required events were things like Walmarts and Lowes), and there’s a fair amount of driving to locations

Look into a Porter position with a property management company.

Our Porters make $12-$14 an hour just doing cleanup at strip malls and some Schools. You’re pretty much on your own too.
